There are two inns featured in Treasure Island. One is the Admiral Benbow; the other is the Spy–glass Tavern. The latter is in Bristol, and is run by Long John Silver.
The vetters pointed this out to the setters, who chose to ignore the ambiguity.
We were asked about the Spy–glass in Week 4 of this season – on 11 November 2017 (Round 1, Arts & Entertainment, Question 5). On that occasion I wrote:
"The Spy–glass Tavern is not to be confused with the Admiral Benbow, which is where the narrative begins. This is run by Jim Hawkins's mother (his father having recently died).
"Jim goes to the Spy–glass in Chapter 8, to meet Silver.
"The location of the Admiral Benbow is not made clear; we just know it's somewhere on the coast of south–west England (presumably on the Bristol Channel, rather than the South Coast)."
